Tacky Flydrophobic Fly Box Review

Innovation where you least expected it. The Tacky Flydrophobic Fly Box Review is here and we’re stoked to jump into it. As far as fly boxes are concerned, this is one of the best on the market. It’s brother, the OG Tacky, is worth every penny but if you’re the type that just has to break what’s not broken, consider this box.

Fishpond calls this fly box the “most innovative fly box ever built” and they’re probably right. The fly box didn’t really need innovation until we realized it did.

What makes this box so great? Well, a couple of things. First off, we don’t really sacrifice space (other than, it’s not double sided like the Tacky 2X). The second is, it’s waterproof and it dries flies from the inside out.

Tacky Flydrophobic Fly Box Review: was it really necessary?

First things first, if you’re really considering whether or not you should buy this box, you should probably just do it. It comes in at a price point that’s barely $10 above their other models, making it an extremely affordable option for the technologically advanced fly fisherman that you obviously are.

As far as specs are concerned, there’s really only two that we care about.

  • 7.25” x 4” x 1”
  • Holds up to 100 flies

The Flydrophobic Fly Box includes the “tacky” silicon anchoring system that first made the brand famous, so nothing changes there.

If there’s any downside to this box, it’s that the box is not two sided. I would imagine that Tacky will come out with a second or even third variation of the box down the road, after they test the market.

We ended up buying a couple just to test them out, and they’re solid. The breathable fabric appears to be pretty durable, so for all intents and purposes this box is one of the best on the market.

Original Tacky Fly Box vs. Flydrophobic?

As I write this, I own one of the Flydrophobic boxes. When the OG Tacky box was released, I purchased a couple (ended up giving some away when I upgraded to the 2X across the board) and swapped everything to the original. Personally, if you’re considering getting this box, I’d say get one. If you like it, keep it. If not, give it to a young up and coming fly fisherman that you know and get them hooked on the brand.

The Flydrophobic box vents air extremely well, so, when you’re fishing on a warmer day there is no condensation or dripping on the inside of the box. Believe it or not, that’s actually pretty nice.

Here’s my current setup. 1 OG Tacky Box, two 2X boxes (double sided Tacky Boxes), two of the Original by Fishpond Tacky Boxes (see through, one sided) and one of the new Flydrophobic Boxes. I’ll probably get one more of the Flydrophobic boxes just so I can have one for dries and one for my nymphs, but from there I’ll be set.

Conclusion

In the end, this is one of the highest rated fly boxes that you’ll find on the market.  You’ll spend a little bit more money upfront, but you’ll get every bit of use out of it as possible.
